What is Sport Weight Yarn and what could we use instead?

My nana is knitting me some baby clothes for my baby which is due in November. We found a pattern online but it requires 'Sport weight yarn'. My Nana asked the local craft shops about it and none of them knew what it was!
What is sports weight yarn and what could we use as a subsitute?

"Weight" in yarn just refers to the thickness, also known as gauge, of yarn. Sport weight yarn usually knits up in US #3-5 (3.25 - 3.75 mm) needles. And even if you have 2 yarns in the same sport weight category, there might be a slight difference in gauge - one may be a light sportweight (on the thinner side) and one may be a heavier sport weight (on the thicker side). So, it's important for you to knit a swatch to check your gauge with your yarn and count the number of stitches and rows per inch. A good pattern will tell you the gauge needed. If you don't get the right gauge you will end up with an ill-fitting garment.

Where to buy the yarn? Well, hobby/craft stores are limited in the selection of yarns and yarn weights, but it doesn't mean you can't find them there. JoAnns will have more yarns than Michaels or WalMart. Check the labels of the yarns -- the labels always give you gauge. (But you should still check the gauge and do a swatch when you get home because everyone has different tension when they knit). If you still feel lost or if you still can't find a yarn you like, a better bet is to go to you local yarn store and ask someone to help you select yarn. Your local yarn shop should have knowledgeable people to help you with all your yarn and knitting questions.
